TUPELO, Miss. (WTVA) -- The Tupelo-Lee Humane Society has been enforcing the city's animal control laws by writing tickets, but some city officials say that may be illegal.
During a City Council work session Tuesday, it was mentioned that an opinion from the Mississippi Attorney General's Office said only city employees can write citations.
Employees with the Humane Society are not on the city payroll.
Council President Fred Pitts said the city will continue to allow the Humane Society to handle enforcement duties.
But he added the council plans to vote next month to end that, leaving enforcement strictly to the Tupelo Police Department.
An officer is being trained now to specifically handle animal control.
