COLUMBUS, Miss. (WTVA) -- A one week inspection was recently completed at Columbus Air Force Base.

Officials said 170 inspectors from 10 inspection teams came to grade 61,000 items and validate that the base accomplishes its mission.

"Columbus Air Force Base did extremely well," said Colonel Jim Sears, the 14th Flying Training Wing commander. "We were able to meet standards in all of our graded areas, which is a testament to the work and the effort that the men and women here have been able to put forth."

The inspection that occurs every two years is something that's important to all men and women in uniform regardless of rank.

"The best thing that our airmen can take from this inspection is that they were able to validate," added Sears. "They really do their job. They do it well — well within compliance."

Now that the inspection process is completed, Columbus Air Force Base looks forward to several projects, such as the reconstruction of the center runway.

"There will be a lot of construction on that entire runway," said Sears, "essentially from March through September."

The 14th Flying Training Wing commander said even in the areas of high marks, the base can strive to reach the highest standard possible in all aspects.

"Our job here as we produce pilots, advance airmen and feed the fight is not only to focus on those negative items that did not meet the standards that we had set for ourselves but to also take even the ones we did very well at and where we can make those even better as we go forward," added Sears.

The inspection process also affords the command to find the best practices and share those with other bases to make sure the U.S. Air Force is in top shape at all times.
