PONTOTOC, Miss. (WTVA) -- A well-known shortcut in Pontotoc is closed for the next month.

The bridge on N. Brooks Street is being repaired.

The street is a path traveled often by people who want to get from the east side of town to the new Highway 9.

Ms. Doloris Munn said she has to take a different route because the construction sits at the end of her driveway.

"I've been so use to going the other way that I cut-off up there to Bolton Street to come home," said Munn.

But she is not alone. The mailman, the school bus and the garbage trucks have to take different routes.

"There are a lot of houses on this road and we are going to have to make it safer for school busses to cross," said Mayor Jeff Stafford. "Now, its [construction] inconvenient for a school bus to go through and also the garbage pickup. Hopefully within a month we will be through," added Stafford

Officials said the old wooden bridge has started to deteriorate.

Mayor Stafford said the construction was needed because of the wear and tear from cars and trucks over 50 years.

First, workers must move and replace the water, sewer and gas lines.

Then, workers will replace the wooden bridge with a concrete bridge.
