JACKSON, Miss. (WTVA) -- Clay County is the largest county that could see a consolidation of school districts.
A bill passed by the Senate Education Committee would merge the Clay County School District into the West Point Municipal School District.
The bill is authored by Senator Gray Tollison of Oxford.
He says the Clay County School District is the smallest in the state and pays nearly $350,000 on administration for fewer than 100 students.
West Point also ready has a contract with the county schools to allow junior and senior high school students to attend classes in the city.
Currently, West Clay Elementary School in Montpelier is the only school in the Clay County school district.
The bill says the new district would be called the West Point Consolidated School District.
If approved and signed into law, the bill would call for a special election in November of 2014 to elect a school board for the new district.
The consolidation would become official on July 1, 2015.
The bill now moves to the full Senate for consideration.
