TUPELO, Miss. (WTVA) — Tupelo police shut down Main Street through the Fairpark District Friday night after a couple of abandoned backpacks were found near the fountain by City Hall.

Major Jackie Clayton says some people walking their pet spotted the backpacks before 7 p.m. and called law enforcement.

The bomb squad was brought in to check out the backpacks.  Clayton says one had some clothes while the other was empty.

Main Street was closed between Elizabeth and Front streets as officers evaluated the backpacks.

The discovery happened while a concert was taking place at the BancorpSouth Arena.

Those staying at the Hilton Garden Inn nearby were kept away from Fairpark.
