PONTOTOC, Miss. (WTVA) -- Ashley's Angels has been spreading its wings for years throughout north Mississippi.

Larry Ferguson started the organization after he learned a little girl in one his wife's former classes was homeless during the Christmas season.

"They weren't going to have Christmas that year. They were actually living in the back seat of their car," said Ferguson.

Ferguson along with others raised enough money for find the family an apartment and fund Christmas.

Now, 14 years later, what started with only a budget of about $700 has now toppled well over $121,000.

"We are not only doing it here now, we are doing it in Wisconsin and Pennsylvania and we are looking to do it further," added Ferguson.

The number of volunteers has grown and so have the requests.

"Santa makes a list and checks it twice. We make a list and check it 50 times," said Ferguson's wife Cathie.

"We buy them three pair of pants, three shirts, a coat, shoes and then toys," said Ferguson.

On top of that, each family receives a basket full of groceries including a ham and desert.

"We make sure one day a year they could have a good meal. I know(for sure) they will have a good meal," said Ferguson.

Although it takes a lot of effort and time, volunteers said it's well worth it.

The only way to get on the list for Ashley's Angels is through your school counselors.
