COLUMBUS, Miss. (WTVA) -- An arrest has been made in the robbery and shooting of a mail carrier in Lowndes County Thursday afternoon.
Lowndes County Chief Deputy Mark Miley tells WTVA.com Arthur Lee Whitfield, 17, of Kalamazoo, Michigan was arrested Friday afternoon at the Yorkville Apartments by Lowndes County deputies and U. S. Postal Inspectors.
Whitfield has been charged as an adult with aggravated assault and armed robbery.
The shooting happened around Noon Thursday on Applewood Drive at the Providence Place housing complex.
Authorities say the mail carrier was putting mail in boxes at the drop-area for the complex when he was approached by a man who demanded money.
The man fled the scene following the shooting.
Authorities have not released the name of the mail carrier, but he remains hospitalized.
Miley says Whitfield will make an initial appearance in Lowndes County Justice Court Monday.
He is currently being held in the Lowndes County Detention Center.
