OKOLONA, Miss. (WTVA) — What defines a vicious dog? Is it one that runs at you barking, one that just looks mean or a dog on the loose without any true owner? It's now the City of Okolona's turn to take a crack at adopting an ordinance against dogs that could harm you or your pets.
Friday Okolona city attorney, Gene Barton, told residents about plans to implement an animal control ordinance within the city.
This proposed ordinance defines a "dangerous animal," as a pitbull terrier or any Staffordshire bull terrier breed.
Now, the city is not looking to ban these dogs.
However, if you own one you'd be required to pay a one-time payment of $50 for a permit that allows you to keep the animal within the city limits. Failing to register an animal would result in a $150 fine per dog.
An owner will also have to register the animal with the city.
This ordinance would also give law enforcement more control over dogs running at large.
An owner of one of these dogs would be fined if the animal is caught roaming the city.
There's no word on when the council will formally vote on the proposal.
