Late this afternoon, firefighters responded to a fire at the Danville Baptist Church in Alcorn County.
Luckily no one was hurt.
"The fire started in the attic in the back and came to the front of the building and it was contained to the fellowship hall. There was very light smoke damage to the sanctuary, but overall I think it's been a good day. All the fireman who showed up, all the volunteer fire departments from Alcorn county worked together and did a wonderful job - I appreciate everyone of them," said Fire Coordinator Ricky Gibens.
Charlie Cooper is the pastor of the Danville Baptist Church and told WTVA that people were at the church not long before the fire started.
"Some of the ladies had been here all day working in the fellowship hall. They hadn't been gone more than thirty minutes before the blaze broke out. They think it started in the attic, that's what they're saying," said Cooper.
"We think it started in a wire that goes from the fuse box to a light in the back of the Fellowship Hall. That's where we think it started at," said Gibens.
Fire officials and church leaders alike were happy with the response to the fire and thankful that the sanctuary didn't sustain any damage.
"Done our very best here as you see and we still have a building standing," said Fire Chief Gary Yancey.
"Well it didn't hurt the sanctuary so that's good and we'll just go from day-to-day and we'll just thank the Lord that it didn't get the sanctuary also," said the pastor.
Officials believe that the fellowship hall could be repaired within a short time.
