VERONA, Miss. (WTVA) -- There will soon be a safer route to school for children in Verona.
The city has received a grant from the Department of Transportation to build close to two miles of new sidewalks.
A new sidewalk will begin at the Verona city limits on Highway 145 or Raymond Street and move southward to Eighth Street.
A sidewalk will be built at Tenth Street and continue on College Street until it reaches the Verona Elementary School.
"Oh! It's gonna be a great asset to this community and to this area and for the school system here in Verona and it's gonna be a big thing for this area," Verona resident Paul Collier said.
"If you are coming down, you will have to walk in the road. You can walk on the sidewalk," Verona Elementary School student Joseph Hickman said.
The sidewalk project is set to be complete in May, 2013.
Verona Elementary Principal Temeka Shannon says students from Plantersville Middle School and Shannon High School will also be safer because of the sidewalks.
