1973, Mark Essex shoots and kills 10 people and wounds 13 others at Howard Johnson's hotel in New Orleans before being shot to death by police officers.
1990, the Leaning Tower of Pisa is closed to the public. It would not reopen until 2001 after more than decade of corrective reconstruction and stabilization efforts.
