STARKVILLE, Miss. (WTVA) - Election officials in Starkville have declared a winner in the incredibly close Alderman Ward Four race.
Wednesday night, Starkville City Clerk Taylor Adams told WTVA.com that Jason Walker won the very close race with 194 votes compared to his opponent John Gaskin who had 190 votes.
Taylor says that it has been a long day after counting the twelve affidavit ballots in this race and the affidavit ballots in another close alderman race.
In the Alderman Ward Four race, each candidate had 186 votes before the affidavit ballots were counted.
Adams says Walker gained eight affidavit votes while Gaskin had four.
Election workers will continue working on Thursday on the Alderman Ward Two race.
In that race, only two votes separate the two contenders, (i) Sandra Sistrunk (179 votes) and Lisa Wynne (177 votes).
Adams tells WTVA.com that there are 17 affidavit ballots in this race; six have been rejected, eight have been challenged by either candidate, and three have been accepted.
He says none of the ballots have been opened to help protect the identity of the voters.
