LOWNDES COUNTY, Miss. (WTVA) -- Lowndes County Coroner Greg Merchant says a three-year-old boy drowned in the Tombigbee River Sunday afternoon.

It happened just before 3:00 p.m.

Merchant said the victim is Landon Henson, 3, of West Point.

The child's family went boating just north of DeWayne Hayes Recreation.

Merchant said the three-year-old got into the water without the family noticing.

He said the family found the child's body in the water sometime later.

They tried to administer CPR.

The child was taken to a local physician's home, where more CPR was performed.

Merchant said the child was then taken to Baptist Memorial Hospital in Columbus where he was pronounced dead.

Merchant said the investigation is ongoing but it appears to be a tragic accident.

He said no charges have been filed and he doesn't expect there to be any filed in the future.
