JACKSON, Miss. (AP) _ The University of Mississippi Medical Center mistakenly emailed social security numbers, grade point averages and other personal information for most of its student body this week.
The Clarion-Ledger reports that the violation of state and federal privacy laws happened Wednesday when UMMC's accounting department attached the data to a mass email notifying students about changes to the school's health insurance.
The attached spreadsheet contained personal information for 2,281 students.

Attempts to purge the emails began minutes after they were sent to 190 students.

An investigation determined that 115 people read the email. It was not known Thursday how many, if any, downloaded the spreadsheet.
A school spokesman said those affected will be notified and informed on how to check credit reports and other sources for possible fraud.
