TUPELO, Miss. (WTVA) -- Tupelo City Councilman Jim Newell is resigning.

The news was announced Friday afternoon by Tupelo Mayor Jason Shelton.

Shelton says Newell and his wife are moving and will no longer live in Ward 3.

The mayor says he is a good friend and a great public servant.

Shelton says Newell will be missed by the board.

The mayor says the council will discuss the resignation during Tuesday morning.

The council will then set a special election to take place at least 30 days after accepting Newell's resignation but no later than 45 days.
