OXFORD, Miss. (WTVA) - It was a field trip like no other for students from an Oxford Elementary school.
Several kindergarten, first and second grade classes toured a fire station, but this field trip was designed to be more than just playing on fire trucks.
The students from Bramlett Elementary learned something that is designed to save lives in the event of a fire.
"I learned to stop, drop, and roll," said Cedric Pegues, student.
"Like you always want to have your hands [over your face] when there is a fire. You stop, drop and roll on your face," adds student Marycile Meagher.
When it comes to safety tips, it's imperative that learning by demonstration starts at an early age with the life saving fundamentals being talked about repeatedly.
"The importance of knowing what to do in a fire or any kind of dangerous situation to call 911," adds Karen Swingle, teacher. "[Plus] have people there to help them."
For the Oxford Fire Department, National Fire Safety Week turns into National Fire Safety Prevention Month.
Firefighters teach valuable safety tips to the next generation, and it's those tips that someday just might save their life.
"We have stuff starting from the first of October all the way through the first week of November with schools and daycares and kids coming by the stations," said Oxford Fire Chief Cary Sallis. "It is very important at a young age to start them, especially on escape plans, on getting them out of their house."
"It's very important because it will save their lives one day if they ever are in a fire so they'll know exactly what to do," added Mary Beth Moore, teacher.
The teachers learned some valuable tips as well.
"We learned what the firefighters use to help, so they don't get burned in a fire. And, most importantly, we learned not to be scared if they come to help us," added Moore.
The Oxford Fire Department also demonstrated what to do in the event of your clothes catching on fire, which can happen from stove fires and from portable heaters.
