KOSSUTH, Miss. (WTVA) - The search is underway for a missing Kossuth teenager.

The Alcorn County Sheriff's Department said 17-year-old Madison Hales disappeared around 2:30 Sunday morning.

In an effort to spread the word, residents of Kossuth held a prayer vigil for Hales at the Lady Aggies Softball field.

Most, like Kossuth High School Softball Coach Steve Lyles, were at a loss for words.

"I'm shocked," Lyles said. "I'm at a loss. It's just something you don't expect."

When high school junior Briana Bryan learned her teammate was missing, she called every person in her phonebook.

"At first, we were just gonna get all of the softball players up here," Bryan said. "We were gonna pray and ask God to bring her home until somebody got the idea to get everybody we could to get the word out."

Nearly 100 people gathered near third base, Hales' position, to pray for Madison's safe return, including her head coach.

"I know she's out there," Lyles said. "I don't think anything has happened to her right now. I think she's out there. I think she's hiding."

Teammates and coaches said Hales is your everyday teenager, and they said she thrives on the softball field.

"She's our only senior," Lyles said. "She's the team captain. All the girls love her. She's just fantastic."

Many said they're confused as to why this incidence occurred, but they are only focusing on one thing: Hales' safe return.

"It really hurts all of us," Bryan said. "To know that she's gone and there's nothing we can really do to bring her back, it hurts."

Lyles said this makes for a rough start to the year, but his entire team will continue searching until Madison is found.

"Call one of your teammates, and we will come get you," Lyles said, hoping Hales would hear this story. "Everything will be okay. I promise you."

Investigators said Hales could be anywhere in Lee, Tishomingo or Alcorn counties.

If you have any information on the case, you're asked to contact the Alcorn County Sheriff's Department or your local law enforcement agency.
