TUPELO, Miss. (WTVA) - Parent Wendi McFerrin turned into a science teacher at Milam School on Friday.
She volunteered at the annual Science Fun Day.
The sixth graders move from station to station in the gymnasium, each of which are set up with different science experiments.
With the help of parent, student and other community volunteers the young people learn about physics, chemistry and other parts of science in an entertaining way.
McFerrin said, "This is a test about sound. I ask the children if the long pipe is going to make a higher or lower sound than the short pipe. We heat the pipes and the sound waves travel through the pipes. At the end, most of the time they're wrong but that's okay! It's a lot of fun to watch them react."
Student volunteer, Tupelo High Senior Mya Bell, said, "I lead them into a procedure-like method before they're wowed!"
The science kits are made available to the school by a Mississippi College professor, Dr. John Hunt.
Milam Science Teacher Marrion Winders said, "He and his wife come up and bring different kits and set up these stations. It's only possible to be successful with the help of our volunteers."
Science Fun Day this year is paid for through the Association for Excellence in Education.
It's a way to learn that gets the children out of their normal routine to learn that science can be a lot of fun.
Teachers say this event also helps in students' daily performance and test scores.
