CALHOUN CITY, Miss. (WTVA)--One man is dead and another is wounded following a shoot-out in Calhoun County Thursday night.
The men are identified as Calhoun City businessman Wayne Therman Harris and Chris McConagill.
McConagill later died at the Baptist Memorial Hospital in Oxford and Harris is being treated at North Mississippi Medical Center in Tupelo.
McGonagill was a wood worker in the county and the violence erupted at a building he owned.
It all started with an argument at the shop, according to investigators, and then 12 shots were fired between the men.
According to Sheriff Greg Pollan, there were five people on the property at the time of the shooting.
"When we arrived on the scene we found two victims. One was lying inside the building and one was laying on the ground in front of the building. Apparently there had been some type of argument," said Pollan.
"One had a rifle and one had a pistol. A nine milimeter and a .22 rifle. Several shots were exchanged between the two. Approximately 12-14 shots between the two. Mr. Harris was hit twice. Mr. McGonagill was hit six times," Sheriff Pollan continued.
The incident is gaining national attention because Harris is a former prisoner and pardoned by former Governor Haley Barbour before he left office.
The pardon, says the sheriff, gave Harris the legal right to carry a weapon.
Harris was convicted on drug charges before his pardon, according to Pollan.
WTVA reached out to Governor Barbour but a spokesperson said he traveling and unavailable for comment.
