TUPELO, Miss (WTVA) -- Starting next week, new regulations will be enforced for parking on the Square and in downtown Oxford.
The changes shouldn't be a surprise since police were talking about them in September.
"You're looking at a later period where the two-hour period applies," said Police Chief Mike Martin at the time. "You're looking at Saturday enforcement where it didn't apply, and you're looking at more than one person out there writing the tickets, and you're looking at more high-tech equipment being used to recognize those who are in violation."
Some folks in Oxford had their own opinions on the upcoming changes to parking on the Square.
"I think it's a good idea," said Cliff Hall of Oxford. "I think it's a good idea to regulate the parking. Oxford is growing, and it's not getting any smaller. The number of cars is going to continue to grow, and revenue is good."
"It's not unexpected," said Elizabeth Vowell of Oxford. "....I think a time limit certainly could help things. I think there will be some resistance initially because folks definitely like to come shopping and eat at their leisure and are not used to being hurried. But if there is a problem, this might be the way to fix it."
"People will get used to it like all change. And people will not like it, just like people don't like change," said Hall.
The new parking rules take effect Monday.
