One dead after officer-involved shooting in Verona

VERONA, Miss. (WTVA) -- One man is dead and another in custody after a Verona police responded to a report of an altercation.

Sheriff Jim Johnson says officers were called to a report of an altercation around 1 p.m. Tuesday afternoon.

Two men had left the scene and the car was spotted by officers and stopped on Mattox Road.

During the traffic stop, an altercation apparently occured between the two men and Verona officers.

One of the men was shot and killed during the altercation, the other was taken into custody.

Lee County Coroner Carolyn Green tells WTVA.com the man shot and killed was Henry Montgomery, 31, of Aberdeen.  Green said Montgomery's body has been sent to Jackson where an autopsy will be performed Thursday.

Officials have not yet released the name of the man in custody.

The shooting remains under investigation by the Lee County Sheriff's Department.
