TUPELO, Miss. (WTVA) -- Leaders of civil rights coalitions, and community members gathered for the unveiling of a monument in downtown Tupelo Saturday morning.
It's entitled "Meet Me at the Monument" and sits at the Lee County Courthouse.
Community leaders and pastors shared their wisdom and expressed their goals and concerns going forward.
"We must remember this line. We shall always remember. Less we forget those who have been through the struggles those who have given their lives their time their energy and resources," said Jim Casey, Lee County NAACP membership chair. "We are just humbled and certainly pleased to acknowledge their contributions today."
The civil rights monument is the first of its kind on government owned property in the state of Mississippi.
