TUPELO, Miss. (WTVA) — Mayor Jason Shelton has signed up the city of Tupelo to participate in the Mississippi Mayors’ Let’s Play Challenge led by Dr Pepper Snapple Group and KaBOOM!.

By logging on to LetsPlay.com and pledging to devote at least one additional hour of active play each week, Tupelo’s residents will compete against residents of twenty-six cities across Mississippi for a chance to win a new playground for their community, built in partnership with DPS and KaBOOM!

The winning city will be determined based on the greatest number of pledges as a percentage of the city’s total population.

The Healthy Tupelo Task Force will collaborate with The City of Tupelo’s Department of Parks & Recreation in this exciting venture. "All Tupelo citizens are encouraged to show their "Tupelo Spirit" and commitment to a healthy lifestyle. Let's play ya'll," said Mayor Jason Shelton.

Unstructured, child-directed play has been proven to help kids develop physically, socially and cognitively, yet today’s kids have less time and fewer opportunities to play than any previous generation.

To give more families the chance to make play a priority, three “runner-up” cities with the next highest number of pledges will each receive an Imagination Playground in a Cart™.

This breakthrough playspace concept, designed by architect David Rockwell, uses reconfigurable loose parts that allow children to constantly change their environment and design their own course of play.

Giant foam blocks, mats, wagons, fabric and crates overflow with creative potential for children to play, dream, build and explore endless possibilities.

Via Let’s Play grants and projects through 2012, Dr Pepper Snapple Group and KaBOOM! built or improved 1,154 playgrounds, benefiting an estimated 2.8 million children during the lifetime of the playgrounds.

People are encouraged to visit Let’s Play at http://www.LetsPlay.com to join the conversation and learn how to apply for the various available grants to make their communities more active and playful.
