TUPELO, Miss. (WTVA) -- A man charged with death of a passenger in his vehicle during a high speed chase pleaded guilty Thursday during a court appearance.

Michael Terry Allen entered a plea to the charge of felony fleeing resulting in death in Lee County Circuit Court.

Allen was arrested on August 6, 2011 following a pursuit by the Mississippi Highway Patrol.

Authorities say Allen was driving a vehicle when he ran from a traffic checkpoint at Highway 6 and East Main Street in Tupelo.

A trooper followed Allen down Highway 178 and the chase turned onto Highway 371 in Mooreville.

Authorities say Jeffrey Trent Martin, 19, of Amory jumped from the vehicle during the chase and was killed.

Allen was sentenced to 18 years in prison.
