STARKVILLE, Miss. (WTVA) - An assistant basketball coach with the Starkville school district died Monday night.

Athletic Director Stanley Miller tells WTVA.com Joel Ewing, 54, suffered an apparent heart attack.

Ewing was an assistant coach for the Starkville High School boys team and for the seventh, eighth, and ninth grade girls basketball teams.

Miller says Ewing had coached the 9th grade girls team Monday morning, then drove the varsity boys team to Noxubee County for a game.

The team had returned to Starkville and Ewing had gone to the office at the gym while the players waited for their parents to pick them up.

One of the players went to check on Ewing after a few minutes and found him lying on the floor.

Funeral arrangements are incomplete.
