TUPELO, Miss. (WTVA) -- Tupelo Environmental Planner Sherrie Cochran says she discovered evidence of a very bad habit near downtown.

The back of Gum Tree Park was being used as an illegal dump site.

Cochran immediately called on the Mississippi Department of Environmental Quality for help.

A $48-hundred dollar grant more than covered the cost to clean up decades of trash.

"I cam through for another reason one day and found just a mountain of tires and the mosquitoes were so thick it was unbelievable," Cochran said.

Cochran says they have new technology in place that will capture images of anyone who attempts to use this as a dump site.

Police patrols are also on the lookout.
