TUPELO, Miss. (WTVA) -- Tupelo City Council President Fred Pitts is running for mayor of the All America City.

Wednesday afternoon, the councilman told supporters at the Tupelo Convention and Visitors Bureau that he wants to continue to advance the city toward being the best.

"I'm willing to step out and work with my fellow council members and the community to do what's best for Tupelo and to advance us down into the future," said Pitts.

The Republican is the first person to enter the mayor's race in Tupelo.

Current Mayor Jack Reed Junior announced earlier this month he would not seek a second term.
