NEW ALBANY, Miss. (WTVA)--It was a first-time event featuring local actors dressed up as famous Union Countians.

The Legends and Lore Tour was a fascinating journey back in time by way of members of the Tallahatchie River Players acting group dressed as prominent authentic figures from the county's past.

"My husband was the prominet doctor, Doctor Hugh Norman Mayes," said Kathy Garrett of New Albany, who played the late Fannie Mayes. "And we have the house over on Main Street which is the current Ms. Sarah's Inn. And I was Miss University of Mississippi in 1919. And I was also a member of the Chi Omega Sorority," she said.

The tour brings back memories of those who are buried at the cemetery.

"We've got different people playing different parts. We have what you call wandering souls which are people of influence and things of New Albany that are not necessarily buried in this grave yard," said Bradley Bryant of New Albany, a member of the Tallahatchie River Players. "And then we have people like Moses Collins, that I'm portraying that is actually buried right here. I'm considered the founder of New Albany."

This marks the first year for the New Albany Legends and Lore Cemetary Tour.

"There's a lot of misconceptions about this area. About how it was founded and the name of New Albany and parking in the middle of the road. All the different things that are out there are rumors," said Evelyn Mason, of the Tallahatchie River Players.

The New Albany Cemetery spans both sides of Bankhead Street and is approximately 175 years old.

Some 2,500 people are buried there.
