Everyone I run into keeps telling me how hot it was this past summer, even for Mississippi.
Maybe that's the reason this most recent cold blast seems like such a shock to the system, because, checking the calendar, this is about the time we typically see our first freeze of the year.
The average "First Freeze" is October 28th, or about one week from now, so admittedly this is a little early, but a week is a very small difference for meteorologists, even if it is a huge difference to folks with gardens. The earliest freeze in Tupelo history was in 1974, when it occurred on October 3rd, and the latest was in 1946, when it occurred on December 2nd.
Even though a few folks have touched that freeze threshold, Tupelo is not included in the list, meaning we're still waiting for the "First Freeze" of the season, even though many of us have had the first frost. With another Freeze Warning in effect for tonight, a few more locations could get scratched off of the list in extreme Northeast Mississippi.
