last season, west point defeated columbus on a thursday night to open the season. the green wave went on to win the 5a state championship. these two meeting again to kick off 2018. the falcons have a new head coach in eric rice. first quarter, after columbus goes three and out, west point takes it right down the field. third and goal....jimothy mays with a two-yard touchdown. green wave take a seven-nothing lead. columbus trying to respond on its ensuing possession, but brentt cunningham and company in on this stop. falcons forced to punt again. chris chambless' team would strike again. jake chambless to brandon harris....huge again for a first down.... then....kameron martin caps off the drive with a fourteen-yard touchdown run.... west point goes to win by the final of 55-6. history being made tonight in new albany as myrtle kicks off its first season of varsity football. tcps is the their first opponent. the eagles were in last year's playoffs. to bna bank park we go. myrtle took the field for the first time as a varsity squad while tcps looks to return to the playoffs once again. after falling down 6 to 0 early, a-i nugent puts the ball on the ground on the second offensive snap for the hawks. after another eagle touchdown, nugent takes the carry in for the first hawk touchdown of the season. into the second quarter, eagle quarterback khi holiday takes the snap and weaves his way through defenders for a 27 yard touchdown run. later in the second, holiday takes the snap, pump fakes and throws down the sideline to reciever foster yates for six. the eagles went into half time with a 26 to 6 lead. tcps goes on to win by the final of 40-14. there were a pair of games in calhoun county tonight. vardaman hosting south pontotoc, which we'll get to in a bit. meanwhile, calhoun city hosting coffeeville. to the boneyard we go. wildcats get the ball first. anfernee campbell runs rightfor 25 yards and a first down... three plays later, campbell bounces right again, and picks up another calhoun city first down... davione hull finishes off the drive with a punishing 10 yard touchdown run. calhoun city rolls to a 47-6 win. vardaman hosting south pontotoc in sweet potato country. south pontotoc's brett riley, eddie ivy, and treylyn berry were suspended for this game for a violation of team rules. the rams trying to take advantage. tied at 6 early in the 2nd quarter. vardaman's tyras armstrong swings one over to patrick pratt. pratt does the rest....48 yards to paydirt....rams take a 12-6 lead. back come the cougars. kendalle morphis with a 20 yard touchdown run. south pontotoc takes a 13-12 lead. ensuing vardaman possession. rams go 3-and-out....thepunt is blocked.... will permenter recovers in the end zone for another cougars score.. you think michael bradley likes that? you bet he does! south pontotoc tops vardaman 33-12. tishomingo county hosting alcorn central. both teams ready to start the season off. first quarter....the bears' kamron rorie hands off to jaxson bailey for a seven-yard again.... alcorn central trying to keep it going on the ground.... bailey again, but for a shorter gain.... so, alcorn central forced to punt.... tayvius duckett fields it.... and duckett is gone.... 50-yard return for a touchdown.... tishomingo county with an early seven-nothing lead. next possession for the braves.... connor pannell finds alex cornelison for a 25-yard gain.... that sets up an eleven-yard t-d run from duckett.... tishomingo county goes on to win by the final of 43-0. other scores. clinton defeats south panola in overtime, 14-7. north panola defeats coahoma county, 58-0. high school softball. vardaman over bruce 13-3. smithville over wheeler 22-4. houston over corinth 15-4. jordyn belle moore with two homers. high school volleyball. new albany over olive branch, 3-1. friday night fever back tomorrow night. that's sports. more news after this. heading into friday and this weekend,
