underwaythis evening in starkville... the number 1 seed in the kansas city region took on 16 seed nicholls.... only once has a 16 seed beaten a 1 seed in the ncaa women's tournament... vic schaefer had no interest in being on the wrong side of history.... bulldogs led 21-13 after a quarter.... msu tightens the screws in the second quarter.... blair schaefer hits one from nit range..... a little bit later blair gets to the corner and swishes another 3 pointer.... just like that, the bulldogs take a 14 point lead.... blair had 18 points... you knew teaira mccowan was gonna be a nightmare for the colonels.... here tea picks up a loose ball and scores 2 of her 18 points... mccowan also had 13 rebounds..... can't forget about the queen..... victoria vivians cans a 3 to give msu a 49-21 lead.... then with less than 30 seconds to go in the first half, vivians pulls up and drills another 3... queen v had a game high 20 points... she also had 13 rebounds.... bulldogs cruise to a 95-50 victory.... wlov sports director jim holder was in starkville and has this recap.... jim: "there would be no 16 seed upsetting a one seed here on saturday in starkville. the bulldogs rolling to a 45-point victory. after the game, vic schaefer was still concerned about his team. they hadn't played in nearly two weeks, and they were still showing some rust." vic: "it's my job to try to help get that rust knocked off, and right now, i'm obviously not doing a very good job. we are really rusty in a lot of areas, i thought this time last year, we came back and were really sharp, and we're not very sharp. we've basically got 48 hours to figure it out." teaira: "we had a lot of turnovers, you know, some unforced turnovers and some were forced, so, i mean, just getting back to containing the ball and not turning it over, that's what we need to work on." victoria: "like teaira said, unforced turnovers, then defensively, we were like, not doing as good as we should, we would deny the ball, and no ball pressure, letting them get open shots, and they were getting layups. i feel like we just weren't focused on that end, and we are rusty, and i feel like the next couple of days, we've gotta lock down, and get engaged." blair: "we would get in a groove, and then we would lose it, and in the past, we've been really good about our chemistry, and our chemistry is still there, we just have to work on all five, it's an all-five game, and right now, we'll have like four, something like that, but i think that's gonna come with more focus, and as a veteran team, we'll have that fixed for next game." jim: "next up for mississippi state, a second-round game here monday night at 8 in the hump against oklahoma state. we'll have more on that game on sunday. reporting in starkville, jim holder, wtva 9 sports." thank you jim. the msu men return to action tomorrow morning... the bulldogs take on baylor in the second round of the nit... the bears and bulldogs set for an 11 am tip on espn.... generally, you see two types of teams in the nit... teams who mail it in because they didn't make the ncaa tournament... but, you also see teams who view the nit as an opportunity to gain some confidence and momentum heading into the next season... msu is definitely trying to be the latter.... lamar peters: 'we wanted to make it to the ncaa tournament but we came up short and we wanna finish up strong. we're blessed to still be playing in march so we're gonna keep playing and finish up strong.' ben howland: 'we were very disappointed that 3 didn't go down with four seconds to go against tennessee. give us a chance to keep advancing and have a chance to be in the ncaa tournament but this is definitely a positive for our team, our program.' the ncaa tournament continues today with 8 second round games... four of them involve sec teams.... what an incredible finish between tennessee and loyola chicago.... less than 30 seconds to go.... vols down 2.... grant williams.....drives into the lane....basket and the foul... williams converts and tennesse takes a 1 point lead.... the ramblers hit a buzzer beater to defeat miami in the first round... could they do it again???
