this may be a surprise to you -- the state health department has issued a report this weeksaying nearly 40 percent of child deaths that occurred just three years ago.. were preventable. wtvas symone woolridge joins us live in studio to examine these numbers. that newly released report.. says that 220 of the 590 deaths of children in 20-15 could have been prevented. and 60-percent of those child deaths.. were infants under the age of one. amongst the many causes? .. accidental suffocation. in the 74 cases that were looked into by the state.. suffocation was responsible for 30 deaths. this could be from parents falling a sleep with an infant in the bed... or parents who put their infant to sleep where bedding or other objects interfered with the childs breathing. and.. another cause of death.. car crashes. the state says accidents in children under 15 doubled from the previous year... and were by far the leading cause of death in children older than 1. and in almost half of those cases.. seat belts or proper restraints weren't used. i talked to the mississippi highway patrol today.. and master sergeant criss turnipseed says its very important thatyour car seat is used correctly. and positioning and placement of the car seat matters. "theres an optimal place your child should be. in the backseat, in the middle of the passenger compartment, that way your child has protection on both sides." of course.. it is not safe to put your child in the front seat.. airbags are not designed for a small child. another interesting fact pulled from the report.. the state says more young girls than boys were killed in motor vehicle accidents.. which is a reverse from previous years. daniella?
