right now at noon... an arrest is made in a shooting at a popular memphis mall ... plus... the search continues for a burgler that got away with stolen guns... good afternoon and thanks for joining us for w-t-v-a 9 news at noon... i'm katrina berry. we now have the name of the victim who died in a wreck in northern lee county just after 6 pm tuesday. lee county coroner carolyn green tells us 41 yr old tyronza ashby of tupelo was the passenger of the car that struck the tree on hey 45 in saltillo. he was pronounced dead on the scene of multiple trauma. a christmas eve tip leads investigators to an arrest in a series of calhoun county burglaries. sheriff greg pollan says deputies arrested 27 year old ronald gene ruth of derma tuesday night. he says the arrest came after a stolen can-am side-by- side motorcycle was found at ruth's home during a search warrant. a second search warrant lead to the discovery of more items stolen from a derma business in august. ruth also faces charges of possession of methamphetamine and marijuana with intent to distribute. pollan says more charges could be filed in the case as the investigation continues. a young man was arrested in connection with a shooting at a memphis mall. wmc-tv reports 23 year old marquice lester is charged with aggravated assault and unlawful possession of a weapon. shots rang out just outside wolfchase galleria tuesday night, leading to three injuries. police said the shooting stemmed from a fight inside the mall that spilled out into the parking lot and confirm the shooting did not take place inside the mall. three victims are in non-critical condition. no one was injured in a morning house fire in in the new hope area of lowndes county on overview drive. lowndes county fire coordinator neal austin says the fire originated in the kitchen area of the single-story house. firefighters were able to contain the fire to that area. he says a woman was inside the house at the time of the fire, but was able to get out safely. austin describes the damage as moderate. the cause is being investigated. the longtime editorial page editor of the northeast mississippi daily journal has died. thenewspaper reportsthat joe rutherford died tuesday at age 69 from complications of diabetes. he had retired from the tupelo-based newspaper in 2016 after 44 years. funeral arrangements are incomplete at this time.. at , we're giving you a live look through our tupelo towercam. let's go to w-t-v-a meteorologist joel young for the first look at the weather authority forecast. good wednesday afternoon! we'll see some clouds linger with cold temperatures. still, there will be some clouds with afternoon highs in the mid-30s. through the night tonight, expect mostly clear skies with temperatures slipping into the mid-20s. we will stay dry with sunshine following us through thursday and friday. highs will be in the 40s with morning lows in the 20s. then as we go into friday night, clouds increase as a system slides in from our west. there are some indications that we could see some frozen precipitation on new years eve with temperatures struggling to get above freezing. then as we go into your new years night, some snow is possible in spots. right now, we're leaning toward a 30 percent chance of freezing rain and snow mix on sunday night. then some light snow or flurries may linger into new years day. temperatures will be frigid with lows on new years day dropping into the upper teens and lower 20s. wind chills should be in the upper single digits to lower teens. then we'll be even colder by tuesday morning with clear skies and lows in the lower teens. sunshine will follow through tuesday and wednesday. for more details, visit our websites at wtva.com and wlov.com. an off duty lee county deputy rescues a man suffering from a gun shot wound. are standing here." "which probably saved the individuals life because we are several miles from the hospital where we are standing here." sheriff jim johnson says the shooting seems to stem from an altecation on county road 54. he adds that man was shot and then tried to drive away. however due to his injuries, the victim could only make it to the nearest highway highway 245. that's when the victim unknowingly waved down an off-duty deputy. upon realizing the victim was shot, he then rushed him to the hospital. as of now, investigators are looking for a late model, white crown victoria vehicle. in west point, the holidays were anything but peaceful for several folks in the area. police saybullets were fired into a home saturday night. you can see this home on washington street is riddled with bullet holes..mainly on the garage door. police don'thave amotive behind the shooting yet.but they believe the suspect is from this neighborhood. police believe a revolver -- stolen from a home friday night--was used in this crime. "a mom, three kids, and a guest there for the holidays at her house. she called in and said someone had been shooting. they shot into her garage." and on saturday night, at least seven vehicles were burglarized mostly on center, lewellen and church streets. police say they're close to identifying a suspect and think the shots fire and burglaries could be connected. an armed and dangerous man is still on the loose. this is jaquavis williams. tupelo police have been working to capture him since christmas eve. williams is accused of taking firearms from hunter's haven. if you know of his whereabouts call crime stoppers of northeast mississippi... stinger itawamba county sheriff deputies actively search for a man accused of beating up a woman. that woman is being treated at the hospital for her injuries. sheriff chris dickinson would not provide details on the attack. travis burns is wanted for felony aggravated assault. burns could be in the fairview area of itawamba countyor the red bay, alabama, area. if you see him, contact the itawamba county sheriff's department. columbus police are still looking for this man today. he's jonathan lee majors the second and he could have ties to the motel six murder. police say 27 year old michael garth was shot and killed friday morning outside the motel. majors is considered a person of interest in this case. if you have any information on his whereabouts, you're asked to call columbus police or golden triangle crime stoppers. greenville public school district could make paddling an option for students who misbehave. superintendent janice page- johnson says parents could sign a form giving permission for a child to be paddled next school year. she adds it would then had to be renewed every year. trustees say they need more input before making a final decision. it's time to start thinking about what to do with your live christmas tree. in tupelo there are drop locations ready to take your unadorned christmas trees. those locations are at (ther-in) theron nichols park on mitchell road, hancock park on ida street, the compost recycle yard on commerce street and ballard and veterans parks. the collected trees will then be given to the army corps of engineers to create new fish habitats in places like sardis lake. bancorpsouth has received approval to complete the mergers of two out-of-state banks. the tupelo-based bank announced it has received regulatory approvals from the federal deposit insurance corporation and the mississippi department of banking and consumer finance. this is necessary to complete the proposed merger of ouachita bancshares corporation, headquartered in monroe, louisiana andthe merger of central community corporation headquartered in austin, texas, the mergers are expected to close effective jan. 15, 2018. new lighting for academy park in louisville will soon be a reality. materials for the project are expected to be delivered and construction is expected to begin after the first of the year. as a result of ongoing construction, the park will be closed for public use during that time for safety. the work is expected to take two months or less to complete. a car bomb went off near a military base in the southern afghanistan today wounding at least 15 people. afghan officials said all but one of those wounded in the attack were soldiers. the attack targeted a military convoy leaving the base. the taliban claimed responsibility for the attack, which they said was carried out by a suicide bomber. lashkar gah (lash-car-gahn) is the capital of helmand province, where the taliban have a strong presence and carry out near-daily attacks. president trump's decision to recognize jerusalem as israel's capital is still reverberating in the middle east... with protests today (wednesday) in the west bank. palestinians scuffled with israeli security forces in at least two west bank cities. in bethlehem, israeli security forces fired tear gas at rock-throwing palestinian youths. some protesters carried palestinian flags and chanted slogans as soldiers fired stun grenades. no casualties were reported. there's much more coming up on wtva news at noon... after the break,,,we'll check back in with joel young for your forecast... but first.. here's a look at today's stocks. good wednesday afternoon!
