counties are filing lawsuits against leading drug companies, for misleading health care professionals.wtva's rebecca butcher spoke with one attorney in the case, and joins us live. i'm told this process started in mississippi about 3 to 4 months ago.an attorney here in union county is one of several invovled in the case. it's a growing epidemic that's also impacting benton and tippah counites. the opioid epidemic has been going on nationwide since the 90s.mississippi has an opioid prescription which ranks it sixth in the countrythe current lawsuit is being brought against at least 12 drug companies.claiming that doctors were not accurately made aware of addiction risks.areas are claiming that companies exaggerated the effectiveness of screening tools to prevent addiction, suggesting that opioid dependence and withdrawal are easily managedand according to the centers for disease control and prevention, in 2016 the rate at which opioids were prescribed in union county was almost twice the national average.the lawsuit is asking companies to halt production and pay governments for money spent on them. all cases like these invovled in other states and counties will be shipped to ohio, where any trial would be likely to occur.live in union county, rb wtva nine news. still more news ahead coming up... scammers call using your telephone number... and
