Birmingham Police identified the patrol officer Monday as 47-year-old Timothy Pugh.

Al.com reports officers responded to a report of a dispute about 11:30 p.m. Sunday. Lt. Sean Edwards says Pugh and his wife had been to a party in Greystone, where an argument started. Once they left the party, Edwards says the argument continued.

Further details were not released.

Pugh, a patrol officer, was booked into the Birmingham City Jail about 3:40 a.m. and released 12 hours later. He faces a misdemeanor charge of third-degree domestic assault. It's unknown if he has an attorney.

Lt. Keith Czeskleba says Pugh has been placed on administrative leave, pending the outcome of an internal investigation.
