SPRINGDALE, Ark. (WTVA/AP) - Southern Miss quarterback Austin Davis has won the Burlsworth Award, given to the best college player who began his career as a walk-on.

Davis has thrown for 3,331 yards and 28 touchdowns this season, leading the Eagles (11-2) to a win over Houston in the Conference USA championship game. He has set school records for passing yardage (10,454), touchdown passes (77) and completion percentage (63.1).

The senior had only two scholarship offers out of high school but has started every game of his college career, except for missing eight games due to injury in 2009.

Southern Miss plays Nevada in the Hawaii Bowl on Dec. 24. The award is named for former Arkansas offensive lineman Brandon Burlsworth.
