BUFFALO, N.Y. (WTVA/Ole Miss Athletics) – For the first time since 2007, the Ole Miss Volleyball team is off to a 3-0 start after taking out Lehigh University 3-0 (25-21, 25-22 and 27-25) in their third game of the Buffalo Classic here Saturday evening at the Alumni Center. In three matches, the Rebels have not dropped a set.
Senior Marie-Pierre Bakima and freshman Lexi Thompson each posted a double-double with 10 kills and 13 digs and 11 kills and 13 digs, respectively. Sophomore Melanie Crow finished with 16 kills on 34 attempts for a .324 attack percentage. She also added three block assists and a service ace. Setter Aubrey Edie tallied 47 assists and senior defensive specialist Cara Fisher posted 15 digs.
“I am really proud of the team, we controlled every set,” head coach Steven McRoberts said. “We had some lapses in each one to let Lehigh hang around. They did a good job of keeping their errors low. We made some errors to let them catch back up and made it a lot closer than it should have been, but we are proud of the team for staying mentally tough and prevailing.”
Lehigh led 15-11 in the first set, but Ole Miss closed the gap to 16-15 after an ace from Rachael Weathersby. Rebels battled to take a 21-19 lead. Lehigh would only score twice more as the Rebels went on to take it 25-21 and the early momentum.
In the second set, the Rebels maintained an early lead of four points, but never quite pulled away. Lehigh tied it up at 22, but the Rebels answered, paced by Clair and Crow, and closed out the Mountain Hawks 25-22.
Looking to win their third match in three sets, the Rebels get off to a strong start, 11-5. They built a seven-point lead, but Lehigh fought back to with 23-22. The Rebels had two match points erased by Lehigh, but finally on the third one, the Rebels converted to win it 27-25 and finish the sweep.
Ole Miss will conclude the tournament Sunday at Noon CT against host, Buffalo.
