WASHINGT0N (WTVA) -- The National Aeronautics and Space Administration has awarded Mississippi State a grant to help with the research to help the agency design and build a rocket to travel deeper into space.

MSU is one of nine university projects awarded funding from NASA.

Officials with the agency say they are looking to build a larger space vehicle capable of carrying humans deeper into space.

The Mississippi State group will use Loci/CHEM , a computer software program that computes chemical reactions and creates 3-dimensional graphics to show the results.

The Loci program was developed by Dr. Ed Luke at Mississippi State.

The total of the grants equals $2.2 million.
