PITTSBURGH, Pa. (WTVA) - Atlanta Braves starting pitcher Paul Maholm's streak of consecutive innings without allowing an earned run came to an end on Saturday, as did his perfect win-loss record, when the Pittsburgh Pirates picked up a 3-1 win over Maholm and the Braves.
The former Diamond Dog opened the 2013 season by shutting out opponents for 24.1 innings before allowing three earned runs in the bottom of the sixth inning Saturday.
Atlanta held a 1-0 lead before Andrew McCutchen hit an RBI-double off of Maholm (3-1) to tie the game at 1-1. The next batter, Gaby Sanchez, followed that with a two-run home run to center field.
Maholm finished out the sixth inning on the mound before being replaced for the start of the seventh.
The three earned runs are the first allowed by Maholm this season, raising his earned run average to 1.03. He gave up a total of three runs on four hits and struck out five batters while walking three.
The loss is just the fourth of the season for Atlanta, who fell to (13-4) with Saturday's loss. The loss is also the second in a row for the Braves.
