Former Bulldog Palmeiro falls short of HOF

COOPERSTOWN, N.Y. (WTVA) - Former Cincinnati Reds shortstop Barry Larkin was the only player to receive enough votes to be elected to baseball's Hall of Fame on Monday. Larkin, in his third year of eligibility, received 495 votes (86.4%).

Players needed to receive at least 430 votes (75%) to be elected into the Hall of Fame.

Former Mississippi State Bulldog Rafael Palmeiro received just 72 votes (12.6%). Former St. Louis Cardinals and Oakland Athletics slugger Mark McGwire also missed election, receiving 112 votes (19.5%).

Palmeiro and McGwire are the only two currently-eligible players in the 500 Home Run Club who have not been elected to the Hall of Fame.

Both sluggers will be eligible for the Hall next season.
