CHICAGO, Ill. (WTVA/AP) - A day after pitcher Paul Maholm announced the move on Twitter, the Chicago Cubs announced that they have agreed to a one-year contract with the lefty, adding depth to their starting rotation.
The deal, announced by the team on Tuesday, includes a club option for 2013.
The 29-year-old Maholm was limited by a left shoulder strain last season with Pittsburgh and made 26 starts, going 6-14 despite a 3.66 ERA. He was 53-73 over seven seasons with the Pirates.
In Chicago, he figures to fill a spot in the rotation behind Matt Garza and Ryan Dempster, assuming Garza isn't dealt. The Cubs have been listening to offers for him but would like top prospects.
Maholm will receive $4.25 million in 2011 with a club option of $6.5 million in 2013.
Maholm, originally from Holly Springs, Miss., pitched for Mississippi State from 2001 until 2003 and is a former All-American and two-time All-SEC pitcher.
