STARKVILLE, Miss. (WTVA/MSU Athletics) – Mississippi State sprinter Daundre Barnaby’s quest for a medal at the Olympics was thwarted early Saturday morning in London when he just missed out on qualifying for the second round of the 400-meter dash.
Barnaby, a senior-to-be for Mississippi State, posted a time of 46.04 to finish sixth in his heat and 29th overall. Only the top 24 advanced to the second round.
Belgium’s Jonathan Borlee recorded the top time of the day at 44.43.
Competing for Team Canada, Barnaby earned his ticket to the 2012 Olympics after winning the Canadian 400-meter dash Championship (46.00) back in July. That title, coupled with his personal best time of 45.67 at the NCAA Championships, met the qualifying standards and the right to wear Canada's red and white.
Barnaby, whose father is Canadian, earned 2011 All-SEC and All American honors in the 4x400-meter relay and was a member of the SEC Championship 4x400 meter relay squad. This past year, he again earned All-American honors with his performance in the 400-meter dash and 4x400-meter relay.
He was the 15th MSU athlete to compete in the Olympics and first since Pierre Brown in 2004.
