I was around ten years old when the first of the "Friday the 13th" movies was released. I won't say that it scarred me, but I always think of those movies any time that date arrives.
Week four of the 2013 high school football season happens to fall on Friday, Sept. 13. It turns out that if the MHSAA football championships were played one week later this season, we'd actually have two Friday the 13ths in one season - the next one is Dec. 13, and the state championships are Dec. 6 and 7.
Let's face it, some high school football teams will experience bad luck on Friday - after all, some teams have to win, and some teams have to lose. It's a strong lineup this week, so some very good teams will be on the wrong side of the scoreboard.
Our Game of the Week is South Pontotoc at North Pontotoc. The Cougars are somewhat of a surprise at 3-0, while the Vikings are 1-2, with both losses coming to undefeated teams, Bruce and Ripley. South Pontotoc is seeking its first win in the series since 2007.
Even though Tupelo and Saltillo are in Lee County, they're actually beginning a series. The two schools have met in other sports, but never in football. Both the Golden Wave and the Tigers are 3-0 this season and they'll play in Saltillo.
There are plenty of other outstanding games this week, and we'll have highlights from Amory at New Albany, Mooreville at Mantachie, Booneville at Corinth, Belmont at Baldwyn, Water Valley at Bruce, Oxford at Lafayette County, Noxubee County at Aberdeen, Shannon at Nettleton, Smithville at Thrasher, Vardaman at Hamilton and Coldwater at Biggersville.
Join us for "Friday Night Fever" at 10:15 p.m. on WTVA and 11 p.m. on WLOV! Oh yeah, and wish us good luck on Friday the 13th!
