WATER VALLEY, Miss. (WTVA) -- A special election will be held to fill a vacancy on the Water Valley Board of Aldermen.

Mayor Larry Hart tells WTVA.com the board of aldermen set the date for the election on August 13.

He says the aldermen-elect in Ward 2, Ray Hawkins, could not assume the post without leaving his position as a member of the University Police Department at Ole Miss.

During a regular board meeting Tuesday night, aldermen declared the Ward 2 seat vacant and set the special election.

Until that day, Fred White will assume the duties of aldermen in the district.

White has served the district for nearly 20 years before losing his re-election bid to Hawkins during this year's municipal election.
