COFFEEVILLE, Miss. (WTVA) -- An exchange of gunfire left one man dead and a police officer hospitalized Sunday night.

Authorities say a Coffeeville police officer was called to a home on Rayburn Street for a domestic violence call.

Investigators say David Long, a resident of the home who is wheel-chair bound, was sitting outside the home talking to an officer when he pulled a firearm and starting shooting.

The officer, whose name has not been released, returned fire, killing Long.

Investigators say the officer was shot four times and was airlifted to a Memphis hospital.

The Mississippi Bureau of Investigation is assisting Coffeeville police with the investigation.
