WATER VALLEY, Miss. (WTVA) -- A former police officer from Yalobusha County has pleaded guilty to federal charges he attempted to receive money for tips on drug investigations.

Federal court records show John Hernandez, 34, entered the guilty plea in U. S. District Court in Oxford on Friday.

A three count federal indictment says Hernandez attempted to extort $5,000 from a drug trafficker while working for the Water Valley Police Department.

He was also charged with bribery and attempting to have another person receive the payment so it would not track back to him.

Authorities say he offered to give information about ongoing drug investigations in exchange for the cash.

Hernandez will be sentenced at a later date.
