OXFORD, Miss. (WTVA) -- A former Water Valley police officer is heading to federal prison.
John David Hernandez, 35, of Olive Branch was sentenced to serve 12 months and one day in prison for extortion under the color of law, money laundering and obstruction of a federal investigation.
Hernandez pleaded guilty to the charges in July.
Federal investigators say he received money from a drug trafficker in return for providing law enforcement information.
In addition to the jail time, Hernandez will serve three years probation and pay a $5,000 fine.
