WINSTON COUNTY, Miss. (WTVA) -- Two people are dead after a one-vehicle wreck in the northern part of the county, according to Coroner Scott Gregory.

Authorities received a call at 10:40 p.m. to High Point/Weir Road, located a few miles from the Choctaw County line.

Gregory says three occupants were traveling north when the back axle of the vehicle apparently broke, causing the late model Oldsmobile Cutlass to flip in a curve and land upside down in a ditch 85 yards from the road.

Lendale Merritt, 34, of Kosciusko died instantly when the vehicle landed on top of him, the coroner said.

Doninquez Clark, 30, of Louisville was partially ejected from the vehicle and died shortly after the wreck from chest and abdomen trauma.

Gregory said the third passenger's identity has not been released, but he only received minor injuries in the accident.

Authorities have not yet been able to determine who was driving.

The accident remains under investigation.
