MATHISTON, Miss. (WTVA) - The town of Mathiston's Development and Support Council unveiled designs for the town's Veterans Memorial Park, which was held during a ceremony on Saturday at Mathiston's First Baptist Church.

The event was in conjuction with Veterans Day and the 237th birthday for the United States Marine Corps.

The Veterans Memorial Park is expected to be constructed on property recently acquired by the town located off  Highway 15.

At the center of the park will be a monument featuring all the names of veterans from the town who gave their life, starting with World War I to the Cold War era.

The monument is in honor of all veterans, but will hold special meaning for those who gave their life for their country on the battlefield.

"That area we hope to have one day called 'Veterans Memorial Park.' It's in the process of being developed right now," adds Lavelle McAlpin, Mayor Pro Temp. "The first phase of that plan will be to build this memorial in honor of our veterans."

The town of Mathiston has had a total of 17 men who gave their life to the country while serving during active duty.
