JACKSON, Miss (WTVA) — State Auditor Stacey Pickering says a demand has been presented to former Union County coroner Mark Golding in the amount of $398,418.83.
Pickering says his office began the investigation on May 28 and determined that Golding submitted false claims, totaling $276,591.56 to the Union County Board of Supervisors requesting fees for deaths which he did not investigate.
The information was reported to the Mississippi Public Employment Retirement System, inflating his future benefits.
Golding resigned from office on June 6.
An order was issued in Union County Circuit Court last month. freezing Golding’s retirement account.
Pickering says the demand is the first step to recover the misappropriated funds.
He says his office will work with the retirement system to adjust the wages and return money to the taxpayers of Union County.
